10 Topic Areas That Can Help Build a Community on X
Elon Musk’s stewardship of X, the site formerly known as Twitter, has had plenty of ups and downs. Some claim that the platform is not what it once was, with, for example, algorithms potentially favoring divisive content over organically popular stuff. Moreover, there is also the question of the favoritism shown to paid subscribers – blue checkmark accounts – over free users.
Yet few can deny that Musk’s tenure hasn’t been transformative, notably in the area of monetization. In the past, a viral tweet earned you plaudits. Now, it could mean a significant paycheck arrives each money.
Monetizing an X account is not the easiest task in the world, however. The platform’s former Head of Product, Nikita Bier, was vocal about cracking down – and demonetizing – accounts that try to game the system through spammy and repetitive content, as well as stolen content.
The best way to approach it is by creating engaging content, both in written form and video, on a topic that is appealing to the audience and in which you yourself have some passion. Here are 10 areas that work quite well on X:
NFL/American Football
The NFL has been highly adept at leveraging social media, and X has become the platform of choice to engage with the league. There are many subsets that you could look at, ranging from classic eras of football to providing tips for NFL lines. As long as the content has quality, X is fertile for NFL accounts.
Cryptocurrency
A difficult one, because so much of cryptocurrency content is spammy. However, X is the home of cryptocurrency traders and investors, who sometimes refer to their community on the platform as “CT” (Crypto Twitter).
Movies
Elon Musk has been vocal in saying that video content will be rewarded on X, and movie topics fit in perfectly with that. Now, there are some caveats, including the fact that financial rewards are likely to be bigger for original content – like reviews, explainers – than simply slicing up movie clips.
Anime
There’s clearly a bit of crossover with movies here, but anime fans form their own massive subsection of X. Of course, you must have a passion for it, as the knowledgeable community will quickly call out those trying to pass as anime fans for engagement.
Technology
There are obviously several subsets here, from artificial intelligence to gadgets to cybersecurity. X is also littered with accounts covering tech topics, though with varying quality. If you can create quality posts, you will eventually gain an audience.

Science and Space
This is an area that is underserved on X in terms of account coverage, but which has a waiting audience. Space is also one of Elon Musk’s favorite topics, so you might even gain an audience from the man himself. Again, though, it is a topic that you cannot bluff, so you must have some expertise or, at the very least, passion for the topic.
Fitness and Health
From tips on weight-lifting to guidance on the best running shoes and apparel, there are loads of areas to cover here. Nutrition also fits into this category, and X is starting to rival TikTok in the area of cooking content.
History
The essential thing here is to find a niche. It is perhaps best to avoid broad and overused topics, like American history or the Roman Empire, and instead focus on more specific areas. Ideas could include the American Civil War, the history of Japan, the Norman Conquest of Britain, or the Colonization of Africa by Europe. If you can get your hands on some rare photographs, that plays really well on X.

Personal Finance & Investing
It’s massive on X. They call it “FinTwit” (Financial Twitter), and it overlaps a bit with cryptocurrency trading. The space is a little bit saturated, but if you are confident in your content and can share logical trading and investing concepts, the followers will come.
Gaming
Right now, Grand Theft Auto VI is all over X. The upcoming game is expected to be one of the biggest releases in video game history, so the engagement is through the roof. X isn’t just as suitable as Twitch or YouTube for gaming streams, but if you can come up with some short-form content focused on gaming, you could be onto a winner.
