Every one of those sites needs someone at the gate once the hoarding goes up. That work goes to SIA-licensed officers, and the questions new officers ask are nearly always the same 3: which licence, which cards, and what a 12-hour night on site actually looks like.

The answers below come from the SIA, CSCS, Dorset Police and BCP Council. Where a figure is local, it is local to Dorset.

Which SIA licence do you need to guard a building site?

An SIA Security Guard licence covers guarding a construction site. A Door Supervisor licence also covers site work, and it is the one you need to guard pubs, clubs or other licensed premises.

Site guarding is licensable activity under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, so working a gate without a licence is a criminal offence for you and for the firm that sent you. Short version? No licence, no shift.

The choice between the two licences comes down to where you want to work in 3 years’ time. SIA guidance on licence-linked training states plainly that guarding licensed premises needs the door supervisor licence, so officers who want to move between building sites in the week and venues at the weekend usually train as door supervisors. If static site and warehouse work is all you want, the security guard route is shorter.

Both licences last 3 years.

Do you need a CSCS card to work security on a construction site?

No. CSCS classes security guards as a non-construction occupation and no longer issues cards for the role. The site manager inducts you and escorts you where needed instead.

This is one of the most repeated mistakes in site security advice. CSCS states on its own “Who needs a CSCS card?” page that people attending site for a non-construction occupation should not be expected to carry a card. The Build UK Training Standard names security guards in the same group as catering staff and delivery drivers.

The catch is real, though. Some principal contractors still run a “100% carded” policy written into their prequalification documents, and CSCS admits that legitimate non-construction workers get turned away because of it. When that happens, CSCS tells workers to point the site manager to its guidance, to the Build UK Training Standard, or to contact CSCS directly.

A CSCS card only makes sense if you plan to do construction work too. Some officers pick up labouring shifts between security contracts, and for that the CSCS Green Card is the entry route.

How much does it cost to get licensed in 2026?

The SIA application fee is £204 from 1 April 2026. The regulator ended a £20 rebate that had held the fee at £184 since April 2023, and the same £204 applies to first applications and renewals.

That fee goes straight to the SIA. Your training course and your first aid certificate are separate costs.

First aid is where people get caught out. The SIA requires an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, or equivalent, before you start door supervisor or security guard training, and your training provider has to check it. An existing certificate is accepted only if it has at least a year left to run. The SIA’s own FAQ confirms the rule applies to security guards who never face the public, so a lone night guard on an empty site still needs it.

Cost item

Paid to

2026 position

SIA licence application

SIA

£204, new or renewal

Emergency First Aid at Work

Training provider

Required before licence training; must have 12+ months validity left

Licence-linked training

Training provider

Security Guard or Door Supervisor course, priced per provider

CSCS card

CSCS

Not required for security guard work

Where is the building work in Bournemouth right now?

Boscombe is the busiest patch. The Hawkwood Road scheme combines 68 council homes, a community centre and space for a medical centre, and AJC Group was appointed to deliver both phases in June 2026, according to construction.co.uk.

BCP Council’s regeneration report of January 2026 puts £13,281,708 of government grant behind Hawkwood Road, plus £9.66m from Homes England. The council had already demolished 625 Christchurch Road to make way for a pedestrian retail route. Community centre construction was due to start in March 2026, with completion in 2027/28, and the residential phase is planned as a 2-year build from its start date.

Bigger work sits further out. The Winter Gardens site in the town centre was still at concept design in that January report, with a Cabinet decision expected in 2026/27 before any planning application. Across the whole conurbation, the council counts capacity for over 3,000 homes on its own land and another 9,000 consented or stalled.

What happens on a night shift at a Bournemouth site?

Most construction guarding is static night work: long shifts spent logging vehicles and people at the gate, patrolling on an irregular pattern, and writing the handover report. Site security vacancies on the government’s Find a Job service regularly list 12-hour nights.

The gate log matters more than most new officers expect. Dorset Police released figures in January 2026 showing 153 tool thefts reported across the county between October 2024 and October 2025, with a combined reported value of £330,643. Of those 153, 120 were taken from motor vehicles. Only 5 came from a work site.

So the fence is not where most of the money walks. Tradespeople leave kit in vans parked on or beside the site, often overnight, and a guard who records every van, knows which ones belong, and walks past them on patrol is covering the spot where losses actually happen. A firm quoting for construction security Bournemouth contracts will usually write vehicle logging straight into the assignment instructions for exactly this reason.

Patrols should never run to the clock. Ten past every hour is a pattern anyone watching from the road can learn in one night. Break it.

Ask before you accept any site whether the employer runs lone-worker check-ins. On a paused scheme you may not see another person for 12 hours.

What actually gets stolen from Dorset building sites?

Cement mixers, diggers and generators come up most often. Dorset Police recorded 47 calls about machinery or vehicle theft from construction and building sites between 2020 and 2024, and recovered the stolen asset in just 2 of them.

Those figures come from a Freedom of Information release in November 2024. Police searched incident notes for the words “construction site” and “building site”, which means any theft logged under a different description is missing. Treat 47 as a floor.

Item type (Dorset, 2020 to 2024)

Incidents

Cement mixer

12

Digger (including digger and dumper)

7

Generator

6

Breaker (excavator or concrete)

4

All incidents

47

Assets recovered

2

Poole accounts for 16 of the 47 incidents. Bournemouth has 6: a hoist in 2021, two concrete breakers, a gas saw and a cement mixer in 2022, then a dust extractor and a pressure washer in 2023. Small, portable, easy to sell on. That profile tells you what to check on every patrol.

Why do stalled building sites still need guards?

A stalled site still holds value in the ground and gets watched less, because nobody works on it. BCP Council’s January 2026 report counts over 7,000 consented homes not yet started across the conurbation, plus 1,000 started and left unfinished.

Carter’s Quay in Poole shows how long a pause can last. Inland Homes started on site in January 2022, stopped work in February 2023 and confirmed in October 2023 that it had gone into administration. The council had already paid £15.4m for piling, foundations and sea walls, yet it does not own the land and cannot appoint a new contractor to finish the 161 homes.

The guarding job changes on a site like that. Fewer deliveries, more perimeter checks, far more time alone, and a much bigger gap between you and the nearest help. When a developer or an administrator buys manned guarding Bournemouth cover for a paused scheme, the patrol log and the incident report become the main evidence anyone has of the site’s condition, so write them as if a loss adjuster will read them later.

How do you get from course to first site shift?

The route runs in 5 steps, and first aid comes before everything else.

Pass Emergency First Aid at Work. Your licence training provider will ask to see it before day one.

Complete Security Guard or Door Supervisor training. Pick door supervisor if venue work is on your list.

Apply to the SIA and pay the £204 fee. The licence card lasts 3 years.

Apply to firms covering Dorset. South coast employers include national operators such as Alpha Security Services, headquartered in Southampton and working across England, Scotland and Wales.

Attend the site induction. It replaces the CSCS card check for security staff, so bring your SIA licence and ID.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an SIA licence last?

An SIA front line licence lasts 3 years. Renewal costs the same £204 as a first application.

Can I guard a building site with a door supervisor licence?

Yes. A door supervisor licence covers security guarding work as well as licensed premises.

Can a site refuse me entry without a CSCS card?

Some sites still try, because their policy demands a fully carded workforce. CSCS says security guards should not be expected to carry a card and asks site managers to follow its guidance.

Do I need first aid if I only guard empty sites at night?

Yes. The SIA applies the Emergency First Aid at Work requirement to all security guards, whether or not the role faces the public.

How old can my first aid certificate be?

Your certificate needs at least 12 months of validity left when licence training starts. A provider will not accept one closer to expiry.

Are Dorset construction theft figures complete?

No. The police figure of 47 site thefts between 2020 and 2024 only counts incidents where call notes mentioned a construction or building site.

Is Bournemouth construction work mostly in the town centre?

Current council-backed work centres on Boscombe, around Hawkwood Road and Christchurch Road.
